The rank of Shodan (literally translated: "First Step") is regarded as the true beginning of a student's training.

Black belt grades in ju jitsu are divided into four classical levels: Okuiri, Mokuroku, Menkyo, and Kaidan. The title of Shihan is given to those at the Kaidan level. The 10th dan head of the system is referred to as Shinan.
