Most martial arts studios offer one martial art, or occasionally two closely related arts. At MSB, we offer classes in three unrelated traditional systems. You have the option of choosing to study any one of these arts, or to round out your martial arts knowledge by studying two or even three of them.
Martial arts training is an excellent way for men, women, boys & girls of all ages to:
Get and stay in shape
Learn realistic & applicable self-defense techniques & theory
Gain confidence and self-esteem
Learn & practice a traditional martial art, during which you will have the opportunity to advance in rank
Martial arts discipline will improve other elements of your daily life, including school, work, social events, on the street, and at home
Unlike the mindless repetition of a gyms or fitness center workout, with martial arts training you are learning, having fun, and are intellectually stimulated during your workout
Martial arts training is NOT LIMITED to ANYONE, regardless of fitness level, weight, strength, size, age or physical ability.
The focus of our school is geared toward the individual student. We do not foster competition between students or between schools. We do not compete in inter-school tournaments, and we never use words such as “lose” or “fail.”
In karate, although students will compete with each other at formal rank tests, the outcome of these healthy competitions does not in any way effect a student’s eligibility to advance in belt rank.
Although we employ a traditional system of belt ranks in each of the arts we offer, and although we encourage students to strive toward both short and long-term goals in their training, the attainment of a belt rank, whether yellow or black, is by no means the primary goal of our school. Adult students will only test for rank two to three times per year (depending on the art), and youth students in karate will be eligible for rank testing 4 times per year. The average adult student will spend a minimum of five years in active training before earning the rank of Shodan (first degree black belt).
At Mountain Stream Budo, we do not believe in long-term contracts, start-up fees, club memberships, or commitments to train for any period of time longer than one month at a time. Students pay a flat monthly fee that is the same whether it’s your first month of training or 15th year. If you decide to take a full month off, you will not be billed for that month. Free trial classes are encouraged; however, once a student decides to join the school, he or she will be required to purchase a uniform and school patch. Kobudo students will be required to purchase their own weapons, and karate students will be required to purchase sparring gear at the rank of 6th kyu. Other than your monthly dues, the only other cost to you is your testing fee, which varies according to rank.
